What a 90 degree countersink is for

A 90° countersink cuts the seat for metric countersunk-head screws. ISO 2009 slotted, ISO 7046 cross-recessed, and ISO 10642 hexagon-socket countersunk screws, and the DIN 963, DIN 965, and DIN 7991 equivalents, all use a 90° head. Any machine built in Europe or Asia to metric fastener standards needs 90° seats, so shops that repair, retrofit, or build to metric drawings use this angle every day. It is also the standard angle for rivet holes with standard rivets and for general deburring and chamfering in international shops. The body diameters below are inch sizes; pick a body larger than the head diameter given in the fastener standard (ISO 10642 or DIN 7991 for 90° heads).

The angle does not interchange with 82°. An 82° tool on a 90° metric screw leaves a visible gap around the head, and a 90° tool on an 82° American screw leaves the head proud. Keep both if you see both fastener systems; the 82° countersinks page lists the ANSI-angle EDPs. Aerospace rivets and AN, MS, or NAS fasteners need the 100° tool. Order by EDP number

Every table on this page is the 90° column of the matching Severance catalog table, so these EDP numbers are the same ones your distributor uses. Quote the EDP on a purchase order or in the quote form and the angle, material, and size are settled. Severance tool names carry the per-side angle, not the included angle (the catalog example is CK-1/2-30, which is 60° included), one more reason to order by EDP.

Why the 6-flute Chatterless design matters

A single-flute or three-flute countersink cuts intermittently: each edge enters, the tool deflects, the edge leaves, and the tool springs back. On a drill press or a hand drill that rebound becomes the faceted, chatter-marked seat every machinist has seen. Resonant vibration is the cause, and a tool with symmetrical cutting edges reinforces it.

Severance Chatterless Countersinks™ use a patented six-flute pattern with unequal spacing. At least two edges are in the cut at any moment, so the load-and-unload cycle behind chatter never starts, and the staggered spacing breaks up the harmonic. Each flute takes a smaller chip, which lowers radial load, spreads wear over six edges, and stops the grab in soft stock. The result is a smooth, burr-free 90° seat in interrupted cuts and difficult materials, at higher feed rates than a conventional countersink allows.

HSS or solid carbide

Both 6-flute series are made in 90°. The HSS tools are premium M2 high speed steel at Rc 63 to 65: tough enough for a hand drill or a drill press with quill play, easy to regrind on standard wheels, and the economical choice for low-carbon steel, nonferrous work, and any material under Rc 45.

The solid carbide tools are sintered by Severance in a tungsten-cobalt grade of 91.7 to 92.2 Rockwell A. Carbide runs at about twice the surface speed, often gives ten or more times the service life in hard or abrasive materials, and pays for itself on a rigid CNC where a tool change costs more than the tool. The catalog rule of thumb is carbide for production runs in cast iron, alloy steel, or glass-reinforced plastics. Carbide is brittle, so keep it off hand-held drills. Speeds and feeds

From the speed and feed page, a 1/2″ body HSS countersink runs 600 to 1,200 RPM in mild steel, 1,200 to 1,800 in aluminum, and 300 to 600 in stainless; carbide roughly doubles those. On CNC feed 0.001 to 0.003″ per revolution in steel and 0.002 to 0.005″ in aluminum. For other sizes, RPM = SFM × 3.82 ÷ diameter, at 80 to 200 SFM for HSS countersinks and 200 to 400 for carbide.

Depth control

Depth by feel on a drill press wanders 0.005″ or more between holes, and a metric flat head sits flush only when the seat depth is right. A Stop-Countersink cutter in a Precision Stop Countersink Unit stops every hole at the same depth: the micrometer collar sets depth in 0.001″ steps and locks it, on a drill press or a hand power tool. Micrometer stop units also attach to standard countersink shanks, and on CNC the CNC-K series holds length tightly so a preset repeats.

Regrinding

Every tool on this page is resharpenable. Severance regrinds its own countersinks in HSS and carbide to the factory 90° geometry, with a standard 1-3 week turnaround and rush service available. 90° countersink questions

Which countersink angle do metric screws use?

90° included. ISO 2009, ISO 7046, ISO 10642, DIN 963, DIN 965, and DIN 7991 countersunk-head screws all specify a 90° head. Standard rivets also seat in a 90° countersink.

Can I use a 90 degree countersink for 82 degree screws?

Not if the head has to sit flush. A US-standard 82° flat head in a 90° seat touches only at its outer rim and stands slightly proud. For deburring or chamfering where no fastener seats in the hole, a 90° tool is fine.

Are these countersinks made in metric sizes?

The catalog tools are inch body diameters from 1/8″ up to 3″, and a countersink cuts any seat diameter up to its body size, so an inch body covers a metric head. Choose the next body size above the head diameter in the fastener standard. For a metric body or shank, ask about a special when you request a quote.

Do you make a 90 degree stop countersink for depth control?
